Is a referral required for my first visit? | No, a referral from your dentist is not required for your initial consultation. However, we strongly encourage all patients to maintain regular check-ups and professional cleanings with their general dentist before, during, and after orthodontic treatment. This ensures optimal oral health throughout your orthodontic journey. |
What do I need to bring for my first appointment? | If you previously have had dental x-rays (OPG and Lateral Ceph) taken in the last year, please obtain a copy and bring these with you to your first appointment or send them through to our reception e-mail. In preparation for your first appointment, we also require you to fill out our practice questionnaire. You can do so by downloading it - link to patient medical form. |
How long does treatment take? | The duration of orthodontic treatment varies based on the complexity and severity of each individual case. On average, treatment times typically range between 14 to 24 months. During your initial consultation, your orthodontist will provide you with a personalised estimate of the expected treatment length tailored to your specific needs. |
Will braces interfere with playing musical instruments? | Braces will not prevent you from playing musical instruments; however, there may be an initial adjustment period as you adapt to the feeling of braces in your mouth. This is entirely normal and varies from person to person. For wind instrument players, such as those who play the flute, saxophone, or trumpet, the brackets and wires may temporarily affect your embouchure (the way you position your mouth and lips). With practice and patience, most musicians quickly adapt and regain their previous level of performance. String instrument players, such as violinists or cellists, may notice slight changes in the way their jaw or cheek rests against the instrument. Again, this is typically a short-term adjustment. Your orthodontist can provide tips and guidance to help you adapt more comfortably. If you have concerns or play a specific instrument, feel free to discuss this during your initial appointment. With time and persistence, you’ll be able to continue playing your instrument just as well as before—or even better, with the confidence of a straighter smile! |
What about braces and playing sports? | Yes, you can absolutely continue playing sports during orthodontic treatment. However, it is important to take certain precautions to protect your teeth and braces, especially when participating in contact sports such as football, basketball, rugby or martial arts. When your braces are fitted, our practice will provide you with a complimentary custom-made mouthguard designed to fit comfortably over your braces. This mouthguard will help safeguard your teeth, lips, and braces from potential impact or injury during physical activity. For patients with removable orthodontic appliances, such as clear aligners or retainers, it is recommended to remove the appliance during contact sports and swimming. Always store your appliance in a protective case to prevent damage or loss. By following these guidelines, you can stay active and enjoy your favourite sports while ensuring the safety and effectiveness of your orthodontic treatment. If you have any questions or need further advice, our team is here to help. |
Can I claim orthodontic treatment with my health insurance? | Yes, you may be able to claim for orthodontic treatment if your health insurance policy includes orthodontic coverage. We do not directly liase with health insurance providers as this is a private arrangement between you and your insurer. We strongly recommend contacting your insurance provider before starting treatment to confirm your eligibility and understand your entitlements. This will help ensure a smooth process and allow you to plan accordingly. If you need any documentation or receipts to support your claim, our team will be happy to assist. |
